Sussex plant records

What plants have already been recorded in Sussex? The list of all species ever recorded in each county is available on the Introduction to Recording page. If you are lucky enough to find a new species for the county remember that you will need a voucher specimen (or an excellent set of photographs demonstrating the identification features) and confirmation from one of the County Recorders.

Each hectad in the list below has links to all the tetrad species lists for that hectad, plus any field meeting reports or other posts relating to that area. Click on the tetrad of interest and you will be taken to the BSBI database which will show you all the records. The last date for each species is shown, with post-2017 records displayed in bold. The 2017 cut-off is chosen because the Flora used records up until the end of 2016.

Another cut-off is the turn of the century. A surprising number of species have yet to be refound this century. Whilst this is something our Rare Plant Register project aims to cover, here are the lists for the two vice-counties:

West Sussex species not recorded since 2000

East Sussex species not recorded since 2000

The only caveat to these lists is that they do not yet include records submitted via iRecord. This is because they are taken from the BSBI database which hasn’t uploaded the latest iRecord records. This should occur soon and we will update the lists accordingly.

There is a very useful tool courtesy of the Bedfordshire Natural History Society. It allows you to compare a satellite and OS map side-by-side and superimpose different OS grid squares, such as monad (1km x 1km), tetrad (2km x 2km), etc. You can use this to map tetrads or monads, or to find out the tetrad code for the area you are interested to record in.

If a hectad isn’t linked it hasn’t yet been added to the website, but if you need the tetrad lists contact us and we can prioritise adding those for your hectad.
